Default Next Record: A Return to Pop

I'm super excited based on the below....

DHG: One thing that really amazes me about you as a songwriter is how prolific you are. It seems like every album of Montreal releases is almost a reinvention of what has come before. What genre of music would you like to explore in the future?

KB: Thereís always little nuances in certain time periods of music that I know about but havenít really gotten into. Iíve always been into 1960s psychedelic music, but Iím always uncovering a new lost record [by artists such as ] Annette Peacock Ö Thereís so many things left to uncover and be influenced by. With my new record, Iím about halfway into it now, and the inspiration has been more early 1980s ABBA and Cyndi Lauper ó things that I havenít really been influenced by in the past.

DHG: Could you tell me more about your next album that youíre working on now?

KB: If I was going to compare it to a previous record, maybe itís more in the ballpark of ďThe Sunlandic Twins.Ē Itís like semi-conventional pop templates. Iím not making eight-minute songs. Itís mostly three-and-a-half, four-minute pop songs that are really hooky and really melodic.

I sort of got back into wanting to make something that is sort of in line with Cyndi Lauper and ABBA and something thatís really poppy, with interesting lyrics and a lot of heart and optimism.

Indeed. White Is Relic is my favorite record of his in a long time, but this seemingly opposite approach is really exciting. I do hope this signals a return to the more melodic singing and layered harmonies in general.
