The pacing is one of my absolute favorite things about The Wire--so much more realistic than L&O or crime-a-day-case-closed shows. Plenty of cases opened up in Season 1 aren't closed until the final season, some can't continue due to lack of funds, and some remain unresolved entirely.

Yes a thousand times yes. Drug ring + local politics + school district + coming of age + poignant glances into the personal lives of everyone in the cast, including a crop of brand-new characters. Don't know how he does it.

Creator David Simon described it best: "...really about the American city, and about how we live together. It's about how institutions have an effect on individuals, and how...whether you're a cop, a longshoreman, a drug dealer, a politician, a judge [or] lawyer, you are ultimately compromised and must contend with whatever institution you've committed to."

I think you'll really enjoy it, David!

ATP, while the pacing is great in almost all of the seasons, don't even try to argue that the pacing is great in season 2. I love the story of season 2, but the pacing is an absolute failure.
