how odd. Discovery... was the first E6 thing i bought too. are all those on CD?
it seems like there is a real lack of vinyl up in here. i want to know who has some old E6 singles shit....like The Winterhawk EP from Elf Power... or the Everything Is 7"...or The California Demise 7".
but i think you have the longest list so far!

the reissue on fire is not hard to get at all, probably for like $8 or something... the one on cher doll, though, usually goes for around $30 on ebay. the lowest i've seen it been sold for is $17 or something like that.. oooor you try to get the super-limited one (also on cher doll). if so, i can only say good luck ;)

id like to get my hands on any pressing. i wouldn't mind being elite and having the one limited to 50 copies. do you know a place that distros the pressing by fire?

thats still cool. looks like you've been at it. the cool thing is about vinyl, is they press singles which aren't available on cd. and if its shit like on HHBTM it has handmade covers and looks really neat.

michael barrett has been a part of essex green, ladybug transistor, and the 6th great lake. this is his own project and the cd is really good.

guppyboy eventually became the 6th great lake, which is basically essex green plus a couple other members. check out the site for their story, they were a very busy band.

"Where did you get a hold of all these, channelfan? "

"where did you get the California Demise 7" and how much did you pay for it? im curious to know."

a lot of this stuff i got from mailorder directly from the labels, which usually proves to be the cheapest route, plus i usually get free posters/postcards with the order. i also like to buy at shows, since the money goes directly in the hands of the band and they probably need it for food and gas.
of course some i purchased from local record stores, which are great here in austin (33 degrees, waterloo records).
the only things i really paid an outrageous price for was the california demise 7", which i purchased 3 or 4 years ago on ebay for around $65, and the apples/olivia split which i think was around $35 at the same time. back then the ca. demise sold in the $60-$80 range (this was before 'singles and beyond' came out) but the last couple years they seem to sell for considerably less. i love those records and i don't care how much i paid for them.

i'm somewhat of a 'completist' but in the last couple years i've weeded down my collection considerably. i don't keep much stuff that i don't listen to and i basically only own/buy albums that i enjoy the whole way through, which is practically the only way i listen to music. i actually have all my elephant 6 related cd's seperated in one part of my collection. i also have special sections for beatles/beach boys and bob dylan who i have about 40 disks of but now that the super audio reissues are coming out i'll have to get most of them. another section contains all my other indie releases, another contains all music that came out before i was born (1976), another section contains all major label stuff released during my lifetime and finally a section of classic country and western. each section is sorted alphabetically by artist. all together now i have about 750 cd's, but i used to have over a 1000. i'm a big budget shopper though and lots of them i got used. my brother in law has more cd's than anyone i've met, something like 4000, and he probably paid full retail store price for every one of them.

so that's probably way more than you wanted to know, but i'd be interested to hear how others sort their collections

the way i sort my collection seems to be most common.

i seperate my vinyl by size and then in alphabetical order from there. and if its a spit record i file it under who ever is on the a side. so heres how mine goes:

5" records
6" records
7" records
8" records
9"records
10" records
12" records
(i have about 200 records)

and then i keep my cds in a seperate place. oh and in the corner is all of my dads old buttrock lps.

it's a dying medium and it doesn't have random play

well i'm pretty sure it's far from a 'dying medium'. i can tell that by walking into a good record store. there's a whole lot more releases available on vinyl than say, 10 years ago, and it seems to be steadily increasing.
i've never hit a 'random' or 'shuffle' button on a cd player and i probably never will.

typewriters
09-30-2003, 07:38 AM
random play is awful. its so hard to listen to an album and either not listening to it all the way or listening to it out of order. some albums just dont carry as much weight as they should if played out of order.

floating norman
09-30-2003, 08:05 AM
vinyl will always be relevant in my opinion just as acoustic guitars have not gone away in the wake of electronic instruments. there's just something that makes me feel at home about grainy, organic sounds that i could never get by listening to any mp3. try listening to pet sounds on cd, then follow up by giving it a listen on vinyl. it's gives a totally different feel, and i like the feel. but my record player broke a long time ago, so i can only listen to records at friends houses.

muskogee
09-30-2003, 10:36 AM
i tend to agree that an album isn't really worth buying if you can't listen to it the whole way through, and thus, the shuffle button is rarely pressed.

I usually prefer CDs for convience's sake. I used to listen to records a lot when I lived in Seattle, but after a while I just hooked by turntable up to my computer so that when I buy a single, I can burn it right onto a CD-R. But I still occasionally buy a record album, and these are the ones I have (vinyl):

Albums

Apples in Stereo - Discovery of a World Inside the Moone + 7"
Of Montreal - Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies...
V/A - Songs from a Crimson Eggtree (or something like that)
OTC - Jumping Fences

Singles

All the Kindercore singles of the month
All the HHBTM singles of the month
AIS/OTC split
Beulah - A Small Cattle Drive in a Snow Storm
Calvin Don't Jump/Echo Orbiter split
Great Lakes - Sister City
The Minders - Right as Rain
The Minders/Tobin Sprout split
The Minders - Tearaway
Of Montreal/Marshmallow Coast - Archibald of the Balding Sparrows
The Music Tapes - Please Hear Mr. Flight Control
The Music Tapes - The TV Tells Us
Of Montreal/Late B.P. Helium split
Olivia Tremor Control - California Demise
Olivia Tremor Control - The Giant Day
Plastic Mastery/King Sauce split
The Sunshine Fix - Beaconary Word
Vince Mole and His Calcium Orchestra - Nothing

Wants:

The Minders live single that came out this year (couldn't find it anywhere!)

My collection of 7"s is still in it's teething stages. To this date, I have:

of Montreal - I Was A Landscape In Your Dream
Apples in Stereo - Everybody Let Up/Behind the Waterfall
Marbles - I Love the Summer
Ladybug Transistor - Brighton Bound
Elf Power - The Naughty Villain
Music Tapes - The Television Tells Us
Marshmallow Coast - The Scent of Credibility
Apples in Stereo - The Bird That You Can't See

The 45's that I would actually kill for are:
the Music Tapes - Please Hear Mr. Flight Control
Black Swan Network - Grains & Sauces
Beulah - Small Cattle Drive in a Snowstorm (though Opal swear they are sending it to me)
NMH - Holland 1945/Engine (because that picture disc looks absolutely heart-renderingly beautiful)
And if anyone has the First Imaginary Symphony For Nomad on vinyl, well, let's just say I'd like you to adopt me.

I'd list my CDs, but it's a fairly random list - there are albums that I don't own that I should, like most Apples albums, Coquelicot or Black Foliage, but thereagain I've got things like the original (re-recorded) Cherry Peel, which I believe is fairly hard to come by, at least in it's original pressing. I won't list them, because I don't trust myself not to start lying to boost my super-coolness. Let's just say I have a fair few. I have all of the Cloud Recordings CD-Rs as well :D

I'm not so into collecting vinyl, though, as in, just for the sake of it, like some people might be with Everything Is, California Demise and stuff. Not that I think there's anything wrong with that in the slightest, it's just that I buy vinyl because I think it sounds beautiful - far preferable to the more sterile CDs. And skipping tracks can ruin an album. I can't imagine listening to a lot of e6 albums (my main examples being the Music Tapes, NMH, OTC and of Montreal, though there are many more). It almost seems a bit weirdish...

i was lucky enough to find that BSN 7" online for $4. its amazing. but they are making a 3" cdr of it...so hold out for that.

ive seen 1st imaginary symphony on vinyl for about $12 online. look around. it also goes on ebay for the same. i had to spend $20 for my copy on ebay.

The of Montreal 'un is brand spanking new - it literally came out about a month ago. It's one of the songs off the new album, and wonderful it is too. You can get it through Harvest Time recordings - you're best off checking herehere. (http://www.e6townhall.com/viewthread.php?tid=1962)

They'd probably ship to America, but I'm not sure. Get all three in the subscription service though - they're actually top o'th' pops! :P

My most wanted Elephant 6 related recordings are the Major Organ & The Adding Machine s/t, Secret Square s/t, Black Swan Network "Late Music", Neutral Milk Hotel "Holland, 1945", and Chocolate USA's "All Jets Are Gonna Fall Today".

I just started buying vinyl this year - so far I'm mostly just getting stuff thats only available on vinyl and I'll probably still keep doing that.

All Jets Are Gonna Fall Today is an awesome album. I love it. I've been looking for Secret Square for awhile, even though I'm pretty sure I won't like it. Completion is rest easy

im not sure if you meant all on vinyl...but the Major Organ album and Black Swan Network never was pressed on vinyl. its a shame. i would totally press both if i could get the rights to it.

but anyways...that major organ cd is still in print and available at orange twin.

and i could never really get into secret square...same way i never got into midget & hairs.

I just meant in general - probably in the next batch of stuff I order I'll order the Major Organ album. I liked the one Louis Armstrong cover on the Kindercore Fifty comp with Julian Koster and Jeff Mangum under the name Major Organ & The Adding Machine.

haha yeah that cover ruled. the cd is amazing though. im not sure if you've heard it or not...but its one of my favorite e6 releases.

oh and add this to my list: things ive recently purchased:

Sunshine Fix "tour" 7" (ltd 200)
Vince Mole & His Calcium Orchestra "katina" 7"
v/a "hey its my birthday" cassette
of montreal "whatever the new one is called" 7"

that place wants way too much for that of montreal 7". what the hell is so special about it? its $9.50 WITHOUT shipping. i sent em that much and they sent me an email back saying "sorry, you forgot shipping...add another pound" and i almost felt like saying:

"WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU? IT DOESNT COST THAT MUCH TO PUT OUT A RECORD!!! UNLESS YOU ARE USING HAIR FROM JESUS' BEARD AS PACKAGING THERE IS NO DAMN WAY I'LL PAY $10 ON A FUCKING 7". AIRMAIL IS AT THE MOST $4!!! GET WITH THE PROGRAM!! THAT DAMN SONG IS ALREADY ON THE LP!!!"

but my girlfriend wants it. so i didnt.
