how could anyone even think about rating this on a numeric scale

08-19-2008, 10:51 AM
yeah, agreed. though, i do like reading what people have to say about the new album.

speaking of... here's another extremely glowing one:

nice! it's crazy how much attention Koster is getting lately. long overdue.

As much as I hate all music reviews, it is cool this album is getting positive attention. All of E6 should be all over the goddamn music press.

I'm really looking forward to Pitchfork giving it something in the 2-3 range as they always do. Or maybe they've changed, I don't know.

08-20-2008, 09:34 AM
seriously, fuck pitchfork. anyone who doesn't enjoy this should fucking keep it to themselves.

08-20-2008, 09:40 AM
I fully expect Pitchfork to again Just Not Get It.

Merge posted about the TMT review and some videos from Athens Popfest.

it also has a link to Julian Koster's reading recommendations.

I'm glad to see that the backlash to the poor reviews for the first album is in full swing. Good thing too. That album was given criminally poor reviews.

08-20-2008, 12:15 PM
from the no ripchord review:
"These recordings have been made on "antique" equipment, including an 1985 Edison wax cylinder recorder"

heh...1985. funny funny!

08-20-2008, 09:01 PM
ever since popfest, theres been an unusual amount of music tapes threads on the townhall. its understandable though.

7.9 from the fork.

That's refreshing coming from Pitchfork, which has never skipped an opportunity to diss the Music Tapes in the past.

08-21-2008, 06:33 AM
yeah, i am so happy about the pitchfork review. it's almost like they've redeemed themselves for the nomad review, which was ignorant and misleading. obviously different people wrote the two reviews, but it's still nice.

I fully expect Pitchfork to again Just Not Get It.

Oh, to be wrong and love it.

08-21-2008, 07:16 AM
Ha. All this good reviews make me laugh. It's nice to see the media finally catch up to what we all knew years ago.

hey people...

ive been reading the old townhall board here for years (been a big e6 fan since 2001) and finally decided to take the plunge basically cause the music tapes resurrection.

now while im super happy about all the positive reviews i just cant believe none of these sites have mentioned 'Cumulonimbus (Magnetic Tape For Clouds)' which is personally my favorite song on the album, and probably my favorite song of the year...And while im happy bitchfork gave the album a 7.9 i think its should be more like an 8.9. they gave ITAOTS a 8.7 or so at first and then gave the reissue a 10.0. i know ive been plugging the album like crazy over at the collected animals board so i guess we all do what we can.

anyway, i hope you people take me in as one of you own as my e6 knowledge is great and i enjoy long winded posts. hello from vermont :]

08-21-2008, 11:10 AM
why couldn't pitchfork just give it an 8? But whatever, it's still great.

08-21-2008, 11:29 AM
I think Pitchfork is wrong about "In an Ice Palace." I primarily know Magnus for making air organs, the kind used on "Freeing Song by Reindeer," I believe. My best guess for "...Ice Palace" is the homemade tape organ. Also, I would not say the song has "the jazzy rhythms of the mid '60's." It's in 5/4 but it's not jazzy. More like eastern European.

here is another interview with "athens exchange" http://www.athensexchange.com/articles/854

this album has really grown on me, but the main thing i'm disappointed about is the lack of liner notes/story/comic/lyrics, etc. with nomad i loved sitting down and reading along with the comic.

oh well! it's nice to have them back.

08-26-2008, 06:21 PM
I remember hearing this was coming, but had no idea it was out yet. So, I'll have to pick it up.
but yes it's nice it's getting good reviews.
hopefully I won't get such weird looks when I ask for "The Music Tapes" this time.

Clouds and Tornadoes is on Metacritic. A starred review, 83, universal acclaim.
