Big Country - The Crossing

I'm gonna go with Jesu - Conqueror, but the real reason I am posting is to gush over The Crossing. I have been listening to it obsessively for the past few weeks, and I haven't listened to anything else Big Country, but I've heard everything else is pretty boring.

11-18-2007, 11:25 AM
wow, awesome recommendation! "the pet sounds of the 80's" really piqued my interest (though i always thought that title belonged to xtc's skylarking), and after checking out some samples of the album online i've ordered it and the next record which apparently is held in the same regards, laughing stock. i had never heard talk talk before (only heard of them) so this was a nice find. thanks.

Yeah it is.

I also like his album on ESP. Much more 'free' than what else I've heard of his, but that's ESP' for you.

yeah, "pharoah's first" is a good album. i like all that esp stuff. i went through a period where i just tried to buy up everything the label had released (on cd at least) and came pretty close. obviously ayler was there claim to fame and for good reason, also marzette watts, alan silva, sonny simmons(!), marion brown, frank wright, sunny murray, sun ra's live albums, even bob james- the complete antithesis (with his commercial arrangments and soupy 80's production) of the esp sound just a decade later - recorded one far out album that mixed free jazz with a stockhausen musique concrete sound for esp. if you're at all interested in that label buy up anything you ever come across, because the catalog is constantly going in and out of print. i think it's went through several different parent owners since i even started buying the godz albums when i was in high school.

patman?

Cromagnon's Orgasm will probably remain my favorite ESP release though. I haven't felt the urge to listen to it lately, but man, no album struck me quite like that one did upon first listen.

wbuh?

It's fun to listen to, considering it's Isaac's early work, but in no way would I ever consider it a 10/10. Half the album is recorded into an answering machine, very badly. On the other half the band can barely play their instruments/barely care about playing their instruments.

Though I do love Think Long and It Always Rains on a Picnic, among a couple others, don't get me wrong.

Yeah, I guess that one was a stretch. I probably wasn't paying attention and temporarily switched from "10/10" to "personal favorite" mode.
