Big L - "The Big Picture"

you'll agree it's the best rap album you've owned

Big L is crazy. Clever dude, but that stuff is a little to grim for me. I really like A Tribe Called Quest's first album and "The Low End Theory."

I second wu-tang and aesop rock, and

De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising or Buhloone Mind State
A Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, The Low End Theory, and Midnight Marauders (their first three albums)
Mos Def and Talib Kweli - Black Star
Ghostface Killah - Fishscale (The Pretty Toney Album is good too)
J Dilla - Donuts
and
R Kelly - Double Up

cLOUDDEAD is only kind of hip-hp, but worth getting into.
I also second the motions for Mos Def and Tribe.

The Geto Boys are necessary, and there are a couple groovy groups that came out of Anticon... Subtle for one, which I think is actually a (much much much much better) evolution of cLOUDDEAD (which I never really liked).

Dunno how I managed to forget 'Illmatic' by Nas, 'Step In The Arena' by Gang Starr and 'Deltron 3030' by Deltron but you can whack those on the list too...

i third the suggestions of anticon groups...also check out Why?, which isn't really hip-hop per se, but wonderful music nonetheless.

How could I have forgotten them? They are amazing.
"My Minds Playin Trcks on Me" is one of the best hip-hop tracks, ever.

The album is PHENOMENAL... but it's actually RnB.
I would have included anything by Kellz if he was rap/hip-hop.
Some of his stuff gets a little blurry lately, I'll hand it to you.
